Ohio State Football Notebook: ‘Mom’s home cooking just falling in your lap’

Ejection Dejection?

Sophomore defensive end Chase Young committed two unsportsmanlike penalties on Saturday.

The initial 15-yarder came following Young’s first sack of the season. Young thought he had a forced fumble, which he also recovered, and subsequently spiked the football with a little too much emphasis, drawing the flag.

Later in the game, Young celebrated a Shaun Wade interception by running onto the field after the whistle. That act of excitement earned him his second unsportsmanlike penalty, which resulted in his immediate ejection.

Fortunately for the Buckeyes, it didn’t cost them the game — nor does it cost Young any time in the TCU game — but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be costly in the future.

“Well, I love the emotion and the fever that he plays with, we just have to make sure we don’t let it get in the way of us winning,” defensive coordinator Greg Schiano said after the game.

“In a tight ball game it would have been a shame to lose Chase. He understands. I think he’s a young guy, but he plays with great emotion. He’s a really good player. He’s really hard to block. It’s not going to be a big thing, we’ve just got to kind of make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Football and Apple Pie

So far this season, everyone has enjoyed watching the Ohio State offense — especially the members of that very offense.

For the Buckeye receivers, life is pretty good right now. Ohio State is averaging a Big Ten-best 350 yards passing per game and leading the nation with an 82.1% completion percentage.

Those numbers mean the Buckeye quarterbacks are accurate, which is everything a receiver can hope for.

On Saturday, Dwayne Haskins was 20-for-23 passing and Tate Martell was a perfect 10-for-10.

Haskins found receiver Johnnie Dixon down the middle of the field for touchdowns of 38 and 44 yards.

What’s it like watching a pass from Haskins flying through the air and landing right in your hands?

“Mom’s home cooking,” Dixon said. “Mom’s home cooking just falling in your lap, that’s what it looks like.”

Haskins isn’t the only quarterback who has impressed Dixon. There was a certain 47-yard touchdown run from Martell that caught his eye as well.

“It’s really exciting to see young guys get in there and be able do what he did,” he said. “We all get excited to see him go out there and make a move because he does it in practice. Some of the craziest things, that gets all of us pumped for him and I’m just happy to see him out there doing it.”

A Little Ticked

The Buckeye defense opened the 2018 season with a less-than-spectacular outing against Oregon State.

They allowed several big plays — including runs of 80 and 78 yards — and the 31 points weren’t too eye pleasing either.

The Buckeyes came into this game intent on playing much better and fixing what went wrong the week before.

Ohio State succeeded, holding Rutgers to 69 yards rushing and 65 yards passing.

After the game, defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones admitted the Buckeyes came into the game angry.

“We’re a little ticked off because at the end of the day we still gave up like 176 yards rushing last week, so we had to change that really quick,” he said. “The coaches got on us. We watched tons of film, made tons of corrections. That’s something we really harped on was the run and I think we did a good job.”

  1. Yes, we know the writer meant “fervor”. However, the great Miss Peggy Lee came out with a timeless hit in the song “You Give Me Fever.” That use of the word “fever” may also apply. One is hot, bothered, excited and close to losing control due to the intensity.

  2. Excellence BOTH sides of the ball…especially Chase…

  3. Chase Young played with a fever??? Was that what caused him to lose his mind and spike the ball??? Personally, I like a player that plays with fervor…they usually don’t lose their minds. Just Kidding Tony….keep up the good work!
