It has been speculated about, and if photos are to be believed, Ohio State has made the move to a defense with a hybrid linebacker and it is directly going to impact junior Brendon White. Friday was Ohio State football’s annual “Harley Davidson workout” signifying the closing of winter workouts. Following the workout, each position…
The Indiana Hoosiers were this year’s lucky recipients of Ohio State’s post-Penn State hangover, as the Buckeyes turned the ball over three times, played without a great deal of urgency, and hurt themselves along the way to what was eventually still a comfortable 49-26 victory on homecoming. The running game and…
Welcome back, friends. In case you’re new to the Grumpy Old Buckeye, this column serves as the voice of negativity, even when things are generally pretty great. I’ll point out the things from each game that make me want to walk out onto my lawn in my bathrobe and yell at people about it. This week we’re talking Ohio State…
Much was made of the kickoff rule change this offseason. That change now enables a returner to signal a fair catch and receive the ball at the 25-yard line. The thought, by most, was that this would do away with Urban Meyer’s kickoff strategy altogether. Previously, Meyer would align his cover unit on one side of the field and…
One year ago, Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano spent the spring and summer watching sophomore Jordan Fuller and senior Erick Smith compete to replace Malik Hooker as the Buckeyes’ strong safety. That competition didn’t wrap up in time for the season opener, and in fact it continued a little ways into the season.
The sound of silence finally ended on Monday as Ohio State’s acting head coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano spoke with the media about what the last month has been like, and they also answered a ton of personnel questions that have been brewing since Spring ball ended. There was a lot said and plenty…
The photo above is of Malik Hooker, who arguably had the greatest single season for an Ohio State safety in school history. As a redshirt sophomore in 2016, Hooker finished third on the team with 74 tackles and seventh on the team with three touchdowns. He also happened to lead the Big Ten with seven interceptions, and…
The Ohio State football team must replace two departed safeties from last season in starter Damon Webb and reserve Erick Smith. One starter does return in the form of junior Jordan Fuller, but he has moved over to Webb’s vacated field safety spot. The spring was spent trying to find a replacement for Fuller at boundary safety.
Now that we know the Ohio State spring game is officially going to happen on Saturday, it’s time to talk about what we’re looking forward to seeing. We talked about it for a good hour on Accost the Field this week, but since not everybody is the listenin’ type, I thought I’d break a few of the areas down that I’ll be watching.
Urban Meyer said this week that the Buckeyes are still waiting for a starter to emerge at boundary safety. Currently, that position is being manned by sophomores Isaiah Pryor, Brendon White, and Jahsen Wint. Given that this position is often that last line of defense deep down the field, there is understandably…
