A few days back, Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson explained how playcalling has worked in the past at Ohio State. What we didn’t get into too much the last time was the vantage point from where those called were being made. In 2017, Wilson and Ryan Day called the plays from the booth upstairs, giving them…
Every year, Ohio State’s head football coach is asked who is calling plays and how the process is done. And every year, every head coach says essentially the same thing. It’s a collective effort and the roots start throughout the week in deciding which plays will be best against a particular defense, or which plays have been effectively…
In Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Buckeyes did something they haven’t done in a decade — they won a game while averaging fewer than three yards per rush. It was only the seventh time it has happened in the last 10 years. And their record now improves to 1-6 in such games. That isn’t the only rarity the…
When Ryan Day temporarily took over the Ohio State football program nearly two months ago, his goal was to hand the program back over to Urban Meyer without disrupting any part of the plan that was already in place. He didn’t went to upend anything that would be detrimental to the progress of 2018 team.
When Ed Warinner was moved from offensive line coach to tight ends coach prior to the 2016 season, he said that as the offensive coordinator, this would be good news for the Ohio State tight ends. He was right, but not as emphatically as he would have hoped. The Buckeye tight ends went from 21 catches and zero touchdowns…
Indiana head coach Tom Allen comes into his second season knowing that the Hoosiers were one win away from a second consecutive bowl bid last year. As a matter of fact, Indiana came up 27 points shy of what could have been a 9-3 record, as those 27 points made the difference in losses to Michigan (27-20), at Michigan…
In their first year as offensive coordinators at Ohio State, Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day helped lead the way to a Big Ten-high 41.1 points per game and 506 yards of total offense per game. The yardage mark is the third-highest in Ohio State history, behind 2013 and 2014. And the 41.1 points per game is fourth-most in school…
Quarterback J.T. Barrett is gone and he is taking his 164 rushes per season with him. Before you start singing “Ding, dong the witch is dead…” however, you might want to slow things down a bit. The quarterback run, no pun intended, isn’t going anywhere. Ohio State’s quarterback options this season are expected to be…
Over the past four football seasons, we have witnessed many Ohio State football records fall. Joe Thomas Barrett IV entered the scene in 2014, saw the field for four consecutive seasons, and demolished the stat column. That’s what happens when you’re an intelligent, talented quarterback and lead an Urban Meyer offense for multiple years.
With spring football in the rear-view mirror now, the process of getting better doesn’t stop. The Ohio State football program still wakes up every morning and puts in the work to get better. The biggest difference over the summer is that the coaches can’t be nearly as involved, especially on the field. But players are…
