Ohio State needed to have a strong offensive line class during the 2019 recruiting cycle, but they didn’t really get there until signing day when they landed 4-star Hawaii prospect Enokk Vimahi and 3-star Indiana prospect Dawand Jones. Those two joined 5-star center Harry Miller and 4-star tackle Ryan Jacoby. The addition of Vimahi…
Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is the second-highest-ranked signee in the 2019 class for Ohio State. And in being the No. 2 receiver in the nation, he is highest-ranked receiver signed by the Buckeyes in the internet era. Anybody who has watched him can conclude quickly that talent is not an issue. In high school, he was…
After the Cotton Bowl following the 2017 season, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young — then finishing up his freshman season — was asked if he had a target number of sacks in mind for 2018. His response? “Me personally, right now it’s probably 10.5 sacks,” he said at the time. “TFLs, they’re going to come. I think 10.5 sacks.”
The early days of Ohio State’s Rushmen Package began in 2015. Designed to get the four best pass rushers on the field at the same time on passing downs, the Rushmen satisfied defensive line coach Larry Johnson’s desire to put as much pressure on the quarterback as possible. The Rushmen probably would have begun in 2014…
When the rumors about Ryan Day making a play for Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison first began, they were pretty surprising for a number of reasons. The main one being that Day was targeting Jim Harbaugh’s staff. Not that it’s a no-no, but it’s always a story when a coach leaves for a rival school. There were other reasons…
Even before he was a head coach, Ryan Day knew he was going to be a head coach. As he said when he was announced as Ohio State’s next head coach, that’s why you put the whistle around your neck. Following the 2017 season, he apparently had an opportunity to become the head coach at Mississippi State, but…
On Wednesday, news broke that Virginia offensive lineman RJ Proctor was the latest graduate transfer lineman to be taking a look at Ohio State. Proctor joined Georgia Tech’s Parker Braun and Illinois’ Jonah Jackson as Buckeye possibilities on the graduate transfer market. Combined with the news of fifth-year senior offensive…
Ryan Day received a sneak preview of life as Ohio State’s head coach last summer. He went through fall camp as the Buckeyes’ head coach and prepared the team for their first game without Urban Meyer. And then when Meyer was allowed back with his team, it was still Day on the sidelines for the next two games.
When Ryan Day hired Jeff Hafley as his co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach last month, most Buckeye fans were probably asking, “Who?” Hafley wasn’t known in the college game, as he has spent the past seven years in the NFL coaching defensive backs. Day knew Hafley, of course, having worked with him in…
Chris Olave caught a pass in the very first game he ever played in. It came in the season opener against Oregon State and went for five yards. He then went the next eight games with just one more reception. When Austin Mack was lost for the season at Purdue, Terry McLaurin moved over to Mack’s X receiver spot and helped out Binjimen Victor.
One year ago at this time, Ohio State’s quarterback room had Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, Tate Martell, and Matthew Baldwin. This year, Haskins is off to the NFL, Burrow will be in his second season as LSU’s starting quarterback, Martell is at Miami waiting to hear back on his eligibility, and Baldwin is watching a quarterback…
