Two-Minute Drill: Urban Meyer Updates Sept. 5 B1G Teleconference

Urban Meyer Ohio State Football

Urban Meyer took his turn on the Big Ten Coaches Teleconference on Tuesday. He provided some updates on his Ohio State football team and also looked forward to the Buckeyes’ matchup this weekend against the Oklahoma Sooners. Here are the highlights.

+ Asked which areas need to take a step forward this week against Oklahoma, Meyer said pass defense — namely the corners, second would be the linebackers taking proper drops against crossing routes, and thirdly interior blocking on the offensive line. Also making plays down the field.

+ Weber and Dobbins are good complements to each other, but it remains to be seen how they’ll use them together.

+ Jerome Baker is more mature this year, off the field too. His attention to detail has gotten better in all facets. “He’s just grown up and it’s nice to see.”

+ Joe Burrow is already throwing, so he’s close to being back.

+ Oklahoma is excellent and they have carried on from what they did last year. They have successfully reloaded on offense.

+ Decommitments are a two-way street. Players need to hold up their end of the bargain as well. They have to play well and maintain academics. If they don’t, OSU will move on.

+ Mike Weber is a more serious player now. He’s faster than he’s ever been and in the best shape of his life. He has remade his body. He’s strong. He’s had a great offseason, which is why the hamstring issue is so disappointing. He’ll play this week.

+ Meyer believes there is too much playoff emphasis placed on early-season games.

+ Baker Mayfield is one of the best players in America. He’s doing what he did last year. He’s an aggressive player and good at what he does.

  1. Hopefully there is more variety in the type of running plays called for the running backs… Running the same play (halfback dive off center) 24 out of 29 rushing plays probably won’t cut it. Maybe we can add a counter, off tackle, or something.

The defense will play even better I suspect.

Biggest question is how will the passing game go…

    1. I’m expecting some variety this week.
