Ohio State and Maryland take the field against each other this Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm on FOX. In advance of the matchup, Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin provided some updates on his Terrapins football team on Tuesday’s Big Ten coaches teleconference. Here are the highlights.

+ Great getting a win on the road at Minnesota last week. That was good for morale and overcoming adversity. Now we have to get ready for Ohio State.

+ This is a big game because it’s a divisional conference game and that’s what makes it important, not because it’s Ohio State.

+ There has been improvement with Maryland across the board. Players understand why they are doing what they are being asked to do. Recruiting has also picked up and forced veterans to get better.

+ The biggest change in new starting quarterback Max Bortenschlagher is that he views himself as a starter now and prepares that way. He gets more reps in practice and is making the most of them. “He needs to continue obviously to grow and develop.”

+ Jalyn Holmes does a great job for Ohio State inside and outside. It is impressive how many players up front can make plays.

+ The first thing that stands out about Ohio State is the team speed. Offense, defense, and special teams. And they play fast.

+ Maryland is more confident this year compared to last year. There are so many differences between the two years that you can’t even measure it. Things are totally different now.

+ Urban Meyer has been tremendously important to his career. “Urban was the first guy I ever worked for.” That’s where he learned what coaching was. He has always stayed in touch and reached out for advice.
