Receiver Chris Olave Latest Buckeye Freshman to Lose Black Stripe

Chris Olave Ohio State Football Buckeyes

Freshman wide receiver Chris Olave was the latest Buckeye to lose his black stripe. Following Monday’s practice at the Coffey Road fields, OSU staffer Ryan Stamper made the announcement.

Olave comes to Ohio State from San Marcos, California and Mission Hills High School where he caught 93 passes for 1,764 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. He was a composite 3-star prospect and the No. 69 receiver in the nation when he committed to OSU back in late January.

Olave’s high school highlights show a receiver adept at getting open deep, which is reminiscent of former Buckeye Devin Smith.

With the ACL tear of freshman receiver Kamryn Babb and fellow receiver signee Cameron Brown moving to cornerback, getting this kind of camp performance out of Olave is huge.

The Buckeyes have two proven Z receivers in Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon, and perhaps with Olave stepping up the way he apparently has, he can make that position as deep as the X or the H.

Olave is now the sixth member of the 2018 signing class to lose his black stripe. Defensive tackle Tommy Togiai was the first back in the spring, followed by linebackers Dallas Gant and Teradja Mitchell. Running back Brian Snead and defensive tackle Taron Vincent “got the call” following Saturday’s scrimmage.

The Buckeyes will be back on the practice field every day this week until a rest day on Sunday.

  1. Seems guys are losing their black stripe more frequently in years past. Wonder if this directly related to Meyer not being there to veto or approve? Or maybe he has always left it up to the staff and these guys are just better.
