Urban Meyer: ‘I Could Have Done A Better Job’

Ohio State Football Urban Meyer at Ohio State Buckeyes Practice

Urban Meyer is officially Ohio State’s head football coach again. Meyer’s suspension ended Sunday morning at midnight, and he will meet with the media Monday morning for his traditional weekly press conference.

Sunday, ESPN aired an interview with Meyer, in which he admitted that he likely should have fired Zach Smith after allegations of domestic abuse in 2015.

Monday morning, Meyer issued a statement on his Twitter account, thanking Ryan Day and his coaching staff for the job they did in his absence.

Meyer also address the situation involving former wide receivers coach Zach Smith.

“With respect to Zach Smith and the events that led to his termination, it’s clear I could have done a better job. I should have done a better job, and I’ll always regret that I didn’t. My time away from the program in August gave me a chance to reflect and it fave me a chance to learn a great deal from these events.”

You can read Meyer’s full statement below.

TheOzone will be at Meyer’s press conference Monday morning and will have a complete update later today.

  1. Yes, he could have done a better job. I think he will in the future.

  2. Everyone makes mistakes. Hard to read a person’s heart. Much of this ‘justification’ of Urban is to possibly shake off some of the disdain that the PC fanatics and Urban haters have. He needs to realize that in the PC/Me Too movement, if one is named, one is guilty, no matter the facts and that haters will hate and especially hate those that are successful! TIme to move on Urban, the PC crowd accepts no apologies nor makes any concessions no matter how heart felt and sincere a person is.

    1. Hi Kurt- I’m certainly no Me Too participant, and I am a huge OSU football fan, and this still stinks. Take away the DV question from the equation. The fact remains Meyer STILL lied at Media Days, and still parses words when issuing “apologies” to whoever he feels requires one. Its painful to read, apologizing for OTHER people’s perceptions in some cases…
And don’t forget this- no one is bigger than the program, NO ONE. It is clear Meyer went out of his way to perpetuate the employment of a horribly substandard employee who maliciously failed in some of his most vital job duties (recruiting visits), and who then LIED to his boss (Meyer) about those duties. In my mind the bad look is not the DV stuff, it’s allowing this sort of clown to remain employed as he brazenly violated standards that players would NEVER be allowed to violate. That’s the bad look, it’s on Meyer, and all the stumbling justifications and tortured apologies won’t change it. I’m not angry with you, I am angry with the guy in charge who has taken attention away from the team (there’s still a team playing and doing pretty darn well, I think).

  3. Dear God…somebody take his electronics away, please. He must REALLY enjoy that hole he keeps digging.

  4. Whatever! I don’t care, and he’s not going to win over his critics regardless of what he says. Time to move on!
