Accost the Field — Is the Buckeye Running Game at a Standstill?

Accost the Field with Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr Ohio State Podcast Ohio State Football Buckeyes

In this episode of Accost the Field, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr spend some time talking about what is ailing the Ohio State football team. What are the biggest issues, are there fixes, and does anybody realize that the Buckeyes are 6-0? The show also includes plenty of updates from player and coach interviews, as well as a slew of listener questions that had to be cut in half this week.

The Rundown

+ Nobody cares about baseball after 164 games.

+ The defense is under fire, but isn’t pretty decent that TCU and Penn State didn’t score a whole bunch of points?

+ Can we compare this year’s defense to 2014’s defense that got gradually better?

+ These next few weeks need to feature improvements each time out.

+ The best thing we saw against Indiana.

+ QB records ain’t bad.

+ The halftime adjustments were pretty good too.

+ Who cares about interceptions?

+ The worst thing we saw against Indiana.

+ The offensive line didn’t have a single Champion this week.

+ The running game has been stifled for a month now.

+ It’s the first time since 2006 that OSU failed to rush for 200 yards in four-straight games.

+ It is not a coincidence that Troy Smith and Dwayne Haskins are the QBs in the two years in question.

+ It’s the first time since 2004 that OSU has averaged under 4 yards per carry in three-straight games.

+ Whose fault is this?

+ Total yards is a weak stat, but yards per play is where it’s at.

+ Is Urban Meyer’s offense capable of running the ball without a running QB?

+ This isn’t Urban Meyer’s offense, so that’s a stupid question.

+ The wide screen passes and throws to the running backs are an extension of the running game.

+ Will Dwayne Haskins throw for 400 yards again this year?

+ Stats books are for losers.

+ When is the next 400-yard passing game?

+ Is it idiotic to say that we would be surprised if Haskins doesn’t throw for 400 yards against Purdue?

+ What is the largest number of passing yards that we don’t think is possible in a single game for Haskins?

+ You have to be able to run the ball and play defense to win a national title.

+ The short-yardage hasn’t been that bad this year.

+ It’s not just teams stacking the box to stop the run.

+ Talkin’ Tate Martell in short-yard packages.

+ What does it mean when Urban Meyer says they’re talking about something?

+ Would Dwayne Haskins be okay being pulled for short-yardage downs?

+ Listener Questions

+ What would the score of the Michigan game be this week?

+ What would OSU’s record have been last year with Dwayne Haskins starting at quarterback?

+ Yes, Dwayne Haskins led the Buckeyes to a win at Michigan off the bench, he would have lost as a starter.

+ Would we like covering P.J. Fleck? #RowTheBoat

+ Will Haskins never going under center going to haunt the Buckeyes this year?

+ Which freshmen have played because of the new redshirt rule?

+ Is Ohio State running RPOs?

+ Will the stubbornness to change personnel defensively hurt the Buckeyes against Michigan or in the postseason?

+ Why did J.T. Barrett throw the ball more downfield than Dwayne Haskins?

One Response

  1. I am SO glad you agree with me about Dwayne -vs- JT. This shows just how brilliant you are.

I’ve asked the question 1,000 times with nothing but a mumble for response: “WHY, WHY, WHY do you think Dwayne was as good as he is this time last year?”
