Safety Marcus Hooker Latest Buckeye to Have Black Stripe Removed

And then there were five.

Following practice on Wednesday, freshman safety Marcus Hooker had his Black Stripe removed and was welcomed aboard as an official member of the Ohio State Football team.

Hooker has spent most of the season on the shelf while dealing with a wrist injury. He was also suspended for the season opener following a June incident where he was charged with driving under the influence, disregarding a traffic lane, careless driving, no rear lights, and purchase of an alcoholic beverage by a minor.

Hooker is the younger brother of former Buckeye All-American safety Malik Hooker, who left Ohio State following the 2016 season as a redshirt sophomore and was a first-round NFL draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts.

Last week, OSU head coach Urban Meyer said that Hooker would be making his debut against Indiana. That didn’t quite happen, but it is likely to happen this week against Minnesota as OSU staffer Ryan Stamper can be heard saying that Hooker would be starting on kickoffs on Saturday.

Hooker was a 3-star prospect and ranked the No. 60 cornerback in the 2018 recruiting class. A playmaker on the defensive side of the ball in high school, Hooker will get his first crack to impress as a Buckeye on special teams.

While you’re watching the game on Saturday, keep an eye on No. 29 on kickoffs.

There are five scholarship members of the 2018 recruiting class still holding onto their black stripes. Most have been dealing with injuries throughout the summer and/or season.

They are QB Matthew Baldwin*, WR Kamryn Babb (inj.), DT Antwuan Jackson*, DE Alex Williams, and OT Max Wray*.
