Buckeye Weekly Podcast — Make or Break Spring Along Buckeye Defense

Buckeye Weekly Ohio State Football Buckeyes Podcast

In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr begin the show by discussing the addition of grad transfer offensive lineman Jonah Jackson and the departure of 2020 running back commit Darvon Hubbard. Then the fellas dive into a full-fledged spring preview of the Ohio State defense. Improvements are coming in 2019. Right? The show ends with listener questions.

(If you’re interested, the spring preview for the offense can be found here.)

The Rundown

 Jonah Jackson is a Buckeye.

Even if he doesn’t win a starting job, he fills holes on the offensive line.

At the very least, this is some very valuable insurance.

 Jackson is versatile and violent.

 He is a finisher.

Jackson brings a very welcome demeanor to an offensive line that was maybe missing it last year.

Ohio State is not quite done on the graduate transfer market for offensive linemen.

(We recorded prior to RJ Proctor saying he wasn’t going to visit.)

Parker Braun is in a much different boat than Proctor or Jackson.

If they can land Jackson and Braun, it would plug the holes from some recent misses.

 Darvon Hubbard decommitted, not unexpectedly.

Did Urban Meyer get swept up in the Jack Miller commitment when he offered Hubbard?

This was Ohio State’s decision to move on. They will now swing for the fences.

Can he land one of their top two targets?

Kendall Milton and Bijan Robinson are the two national possibilities.

 #HugScience

Most people can read a commitment hug.

The Supreme Court would know it when they see it.

Was it a jerk move by Ohio State to move on from Hubbard?

Let’s compare it to what Jim Harbaugh has done.

Any time a new head coach comes in, there is going to be a reassessment of the recruiting board.

Let’s tell a story about Mark Dantonio.

There are always decommitments from somebody among the first six or seven commits in a class.

Deamonte Trayanum is an in-state running back offer to watch as well.

Now let’s get to the defensive preview.

Chase Young and Jonathon Cooper are in their contract years, so what should we expect?

Has Cooper’s career been a disappointment?

Chase Young got better last year when he started listening to Larry Johnson.

What can he do when he listens for an entire season?

What should be expected of sophomores Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday?

Are the true freshman DEs Zach Harrison and Noah Potter more equipped to play this year than the redshirt freshmen Alex Williams and Javontae Jean-Baptiste?

 Who will replace Dre’Mont Jones?

Could Davon Hamilton or Robert Landers move to three technique?

That’s not the kind of player Larry Johnson looks for there.

What do you do with Tommy Togiai if he is the No. 3 guy at both DT spots?

The mystery of the Ohio State linebacker situation.

Tony still puts most of the blame on the coaches.

Give the linebackers a clean slate.

The odds that OSU missed on all of their linebacker evaluations are not high.

 The linebacker situation is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

We don’t know squat about the linebackers.

Which of the 2018 freshmen linebackers, who flashes first and who has All-American upside?

Is it a bad thing that Damon Arnette is back?

Why don’t people get upset about Jeff Okudah’s pass interferences?

This isn’t just going to be a press man team.

Who takes the NFL step this year for the Buckeye corners?

The lack of cornerbacks in the 2019 class is a concern.

But there are still reinforcements in the 2018 class.

Where does Shaun Wade end up?

None of the freshmen corners did anything on defense last year.

The staff should feel good about their two starting safeties, so try not to move one of them to the hybrid role.

This is a big spring for Josh Proctor to show that he should be on the field.

Other safeties have to step up for depth purposes.

 Listener Questions

Who will see the field on defense because the staff won’t settle just for seniority like Urban Meyer did?

What makes the biggest impact on defense this year: coaches, scheme, or players?

Is there a Malik Hooker on the team, i.e. somebody who explodes despite little previous playing time?

Will the Buckeyes be playing a 4-3 or 3-4?

Will this be a Top 25 defense in 2019?
