Buckeye Weekly Podcast — Justin Fields and the Magnificent Seven

Buckeye Weekly Ohio State Football Buckeyes Podcast

In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr discuss Ryan Day naming Justin Fields as the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback and why it took this long. They also talk about the seven Buckeyes named captains this season and why that’s fine. Or not. It was a full day of interviews on Monday and we’ve got you covered.

The Rundown

+ Live from the WHAC.

+ Tony quizzes Tom on the seven captains.

+ Good job, Tom!

+ What’s wrong with having seven captains?

+ Why did Ryan Day go with seven?

+ It means what you want it to mean if and when it happens.

+ Chase Young is the most vocal leader.

+ He is a vocal…leader.

+ Chase Young has grown into this leadership role.

+ Chase Young backs it all up.

+ He is not a lollygagger.

+ The journey made by CJ Saunders.

+ From walk-on cornerback to walk-on receiver to scholarship receiver to captain.

+ Ryan Day said it was a sign of maturity of the team to choose CJ Saunders.

+ Brian Hartline has confidence in CJ Saunders.

+ JK Dobbins getting the nod is recognition of him embracing toughness.

+ It’s gonna be a legit year out of JK Dobbins.

+ No more terrible Dobbins.

+ Could be a breakout year for JK Dobbins.

+ Everything could be coming up Milhouse for JK.

+ Tuf Borland is no surprise.

+ Everybody loves Tuf. (At least those who know him.)

+ Jordan Fuller is happy that Tuf is back to full speed again.

+ Tony is rooting for Tuf, unlike some Buckeye fans.

+ Keep it in house, but make sure you know about the terrible things being said about you.

+ Justin Fields has been named the starter by Ohio State head coach “Urban Meyer”????

+ Fields was not surprised because he had been running with the ones throughout camp.

+ Nobody had a significant experience advantage over him.

+ There wasn’t much drama here.

+ Why did you have to leave us, Tate and Matt?

+ Ryan Day talked about how Justin Fields has to be careful running the ball.

+ Gunnar Hoak right now is where Justin Fields was after the spring game.

+ Hoak shouldn’t really be competing for the starting spot right now just because of his inexperience.

+ Who will be the backup against Florida Atlantic?

+ Who will be the backup against Michigan?

+ No backup running back has been named yet, but Demario McCall has a tiny edge.

+ There is definitely a role for McCall.

+ Master Teague has been limited.

+ All five RBs will play this year.

+ 1,700 yards and 17 touchdowns for JK Dobbins.

+ Tony has to correct Tom. Again.

+ Right tackle still up for grabs.

+ There isn’t really a base defense right now, which should confuse offenses.

+ Why is the defense able to force turnovers during camp?

+ Looking back for the ball works?

+ Jeff Hafley has been drilling it.

+ Chase Young has been impressed by Josh Proctor.

+ What a surprise.

+ “He looks ready.”

+ Proctor’s timing is just poor in relation to the talent already on the roster.

One Response

  1. Not to sound such a sourpuss (as a poster thought me on Tom’s story where it was announced) but the reason Fields was just now announced was so they could keep a QB room. Hopefully this will be the only time Ryan Day pulls the rug out from who he’s recruited and has on-hand. We’ll see but I’m not liking what I think I ‘see’.
