5-Star Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson Commits To Ohio State

Garrett Wilson Ohio State wide receiver recruit 2019

Garrett Wilson, a 5-star WR prospect from Lake Travis, Texas, just committed to Ohio State.

Wilson tweeted his decision with the caption, “I sacrificed time, fun, and relationships to be in this position. Recruiting is a grueling process, but god showed me the way. I got unfinished business in the 614… I’m coming home.”

Wilson ranks as the No. 5 wide receiver and 29th-best player overall in the 2019 class.

He chose the Buckeyes over offers from schools like Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, TCU, Notre Dame, and Michigan.

He lives right outside Austin, and Tom Herman’s Texas Longhorns were his other finalist.

However before moving to the Lonestar State, Wilson lived in Dublin, Ohio, making the Buckeyes something of a hometown choice.

Wilson was also high school teammates with Matthew Baldwin, a freshman quarterback at OSU.

He caught 98 passes for 1,773 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior in 2017, most of those from Baldwin. As a sophomore, he had 53 receptions for 699 yards and 12 scores.

Lake Travis plays in 6A, the biggest division in Texas high school football, so Wilson racked up those numbers against impressive competition.

His team reached the state finals in 2017, but lost 35-33 after Baldwin suffered a knee injury in the title game.

Garrett Wilson visited the Buckeyes twice already this year, including for the Spring Game two weeks ago. He then spent last weekend at the Longhorns’ Spring Game before announcing his choice.

He stands 6 feet tall and weighs 185 lbs.

He will likely project as a “Z” receiver at Ohio State, the same position played by Johnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin now.

Wilson shows good speed and tremendous elusiveness in the open field, as you can see in his highlight reel below.

Wilson gives the Buckeyes nine commitments for the 2019 class. He joins 4-star offensive lineman Doug Nester, 4-star defensive end Noah Potter, 4-star running back Sampson James, 4-star linebacker Cade Stover4-star athletes Steele Chambers and Ronnie Hickman, 3-star safety Bryson Shaw, and 3-star offensive lineman Ryan Jacoby in the class.

Buckeye fans will obviously like Wilson’s commitment tweet (below), but one he sent as a follow-up a few minutes later bodes well for the rest of the 2019 recruiting cycle.

You can watch Wilson’s junior season highlights below. Baldwin is wearing No. 12 and features prominently in there as well.

  1. Tony, any idea what recruits we are in on that Garrett could help sway OSU’s way? Thanks in advance.

    1. I expect he will work on CB Erick Young, QB Grant Gunnell (Gunnell may not need much help), and Gunnell’s WR teammate Jalen Curry.

      1. I think you can add recently visited Elijah Higgins to that list as well. Higgins, Wilson, and Gunnell all play on the same 7 on 7 team.

  2. Its hard to get excited. These kids change their minds all the time. A “commit” doesn’t really mean the same thing it used to.

    1. I dont get excited until I see them play at OSU. You don’t know how any of these guys will turn out…think Dontre Wilson, Keandre Jones, etc
