Accost the Field — Instant Reaction from Ohio State 30-14 Over Minnesota

Accost the Field with Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr Ohio State Podcast Ohio State Football Buckeyes

In this episode of Accost the Field, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr give their immediate reactions from Ohio State’s 30-14 win over Minnesota. What went right, what keeps going wrong, and why does it keep going wrong? Ohio State won the game and they are now 7-0, but there are certainly problems. Will they get fixed in time?

There is no need for a rundown because you already know what we’re going to be talking about. The Gophers had no business keeping this game close and the fact that they did confirms sizable problems for the Buckeyes. They didn’t give up as many big plays on defense, but Minnesota still moved the ball. The OSU defense made some plays, however, which is a positive.

The most concerning part of the game, however, is the offensive line and the running game. A defense can give up points and an offense can still overcome it. A one-dimensional offense, however, will eventually get busted.

So those are most of the things we talked about, as well as some of the good things we saw. And we answered plenty of questions as well.

  1. Gerd, you points about the gaps on defense are spot on. This D leaves the middle of the field wide open with the slowest LB’s I’ve ever seen at OSU. As for the running game OL is too slow and too weak and the formations haven’t changed but the treat of the QB run is non existent so teams just need to go after Dobbins or Weber.

But the biggest issue to me is that none of these issues are being addressed. That’s coaching and Urban and his staff are not getting it done. This is not a championship team–NC or B10–and I wouldn’t be surprised if they lose 2-3 games this year.
