Dwayne Haskins Shatters Ohio State Passing Records In Loss

Ohio State football quarterback Dwayne Haskins Purdue

There weren’t a lot of positives to take from Ohio State’s 49-20 humiliation at Purdue.

The young men of the football team got outdoors to for some fresh air and exercise. That’s always nice.

And Art Schlichter’s name was erased from two more lines of the Ohio State passing record book. That’s a bonus as well.

Redshirt sophomore Dwayne Haskins set single-game OSU records for completions (49), attempts (73), and passing yards (470).

It was the third time in three weeks that Haskins surpassed 400 yards passing in a game.

That was something a Buckeye quarterback only accomplished once in the first 46,906 days of the program’s existence.

Two-thirds of the way through his first regular season as a starting quarterback, he is already ludicrously high on many categories in the Ohio State football record book – for single game, single season, and even career stats.

Here’s a look at where he ranks on every major OSU passing record.

Single Game Passing Yards

OSU Record: 470 by Dwayne Haskins (2018 vs. Purdue)

Haskins: 470 vs. Purdue. His last three games have been the 1st, and 3rd, and 4th-most yards ever thrown for in a single game.

Single Season Passing Yards

OSU Record: 3,330 by Joe Germaine (1998)

Haskins: 2,801 through eight games. That already puts him in 5th place all-time. He now ranks between J.T. Barrett’s 2014 (2,834) and 2016 (2,555).

Career Passing Yards

OSU Record: 9,434 by J.T. Barrett

Haskins: 3,366 so far. He is currently in 13th place all-time, between Terrelle Pryor and Todd Boeckman.

Single Game Pass Attempts

OSU Record: 73 by Dwayne Haskins (2018 vs. Purdue)

Haskins: 73 vs. Purdue

Single Season Pass Attempts

OSU Record: 384 by Joe Germaine (1998)

Haskins: 315 so far. He is now in 6th place, and on pace for 472 in the regular season alone.

Career Pass Attempts

OSU Record: 1,211 by J.T. Barrett

Haskins: 372. Unless you think he’s going to play until he’s a fifth-year senior, this one is probably safe. Jim Karsatos is in 10th place with 629.

Single Game Pass Completions

OSU Record: 49 by Dwayne Haskins (2018 vs. Indiana)

Haskins: 49 vs. Purdue

Single Season Pass Completions

OSU Record: 240 by J.T. Barrett (2017)

Haskins: 224 so far. He is in 4th place all time, and should break Barrett’s record against Nebraska in two weeks.

Career Pass Completions

OSU Record: 769 by J.T. Barrett

Haskins: 264. Jim Karsatos is 10th all-time with 359. That is definitely within reach this season.

Single Game Completion Percentage (min. 10 attempts)

OSU Record: 100% by Tate Martell (2018)

Haskins: 87.5% vs. Tulane (21-for-24), 3rd all-time. 86.9% vs. Rutgers (20-for-23), 4th all-time. He had two of the four most accurate passing performances in OSU history in his first four starts.

Single Season Completion Percentage

OSU Record: 65.3% Troy Smith (2006)

Haskins: 71.1% so far.

Career Completion Percentage

OSU Record: 63.5% by J.T. Barrett

Haskins: 71.0%.

Single Game Touchdown Passes

OSU Record: 6 by J.T. Barrett (2014, 2016) and Kenny Guiton (2013)

Haskins: 6 vs. Indiana (tied school record)

Single Season Touchdown Passes

OSU Record: 35 by J.T. Barrett (2017)

Haskins: 30 so far. He is already in a tie with Troy Smith’s Heisman-winning 2006 for 3rd all-time. Haskins is on pace for 45 in the regular season alone.

Career Touchdown Passes

OSU Record: 104 by J.T. Barrett

Haskins: 34. He’s not going to catch Barrett this year, but he in on pace to finish the postseason in second place all-time ahead of Bobby Hoying (57).

Single Season Passing Yards Per Game

OSU Record: 277.5 by Joe Germaine (1998)

Haskins: 350 so far. His average game this season would have ranked 6th all-time in single game passing coming into the year.

Consecutive Games With 200 Yards Passing

OSU Record: 10 by Joe Germaine (1998)

Haskins: 8 and counting. He is already 2nd all-time.

Haskins: 8 and counting.

300-Yard Passing Games In A Season

Haskins: 6 and counting. He is already alone in 2nd place all-time.

400-Yard Passing Games In A Career

OSU Record: 3 by Art Schlichter

Haskins: 3 and counting, all in the last three weeks.

  1. What in the world is all this trash talk? Remember 2015? Team had one loss and still ended up as National Champions. This season is not over and next week is a by week. Some injured players will have more time this coming week to rehap and be able to play against Nebraska. Also, give the coaches a break and see if they can get the running game going again. If not after the Nebraska and Michigan State games, then if things don’t turn around, have at it. I believe if they don’t get things turned around, there’s a possibility of at least 2 more defeats. So come on OSU Coaches, get it going again. You guys are perfectly capable! The same goes for the team members, GIVE IT YOU BEST SHOT. YOU ALL ARE GREAT PLAYERS SO GET OUT THERE AND SHOW EVERYBODY WHAT GOOD TALENT YOU ALL HAVE! GO BUCKEYES!

  2. Haskins is good and he will break all the records but it’s a different time in CFB, he might become the Best Ever, I would take Troy all day in today’s CFB where the run game is done by passing. We were all told Haskins is a great leader and this is his team, 3pts isn’t great leadership (and missing wide open receivers for TD’s)

  3. Two different teams, recruits, coaching styles. Burrow is fitting in with LSU. Kinda compare it to a Tressel Krenzel team but Burrow will play on Sundays.

  4. Somebody please teach the young man how to slide! He nearly injures himself every time he ceases his running movement. So gifted, and the most unnatural runner I can remember. Pundits all seem to put Cardale in the “non-running” QB camp, but I’ve got a couple photos of His Doloness leaping an Oregon defender and knockin’ a defensive player from WI into next week that beg to differ. Definitely looks like Mr. Haskins could have used some preseason time with the running backs group, but didn’t get it.

  5. Did anyone else notice that Joe Burrow led his team against another ranked team while Haskins broke records while losing! Personally, I would rather have a QB that can lead us to victory and be able to run the ball when necessary. Haskins is so slow on the field he couldn’t catch a cold. Burrow may not have the same passing stats but he has better quality wins and he can run!

    1. Did you happen to notice LSU’s record?

      1. Last I checked LSU is ranked above tOSU….both have one loss.

        1. Putting the problems at Dwayne Haskins’ feet is odd. Put them at Meyer’s inability to utilize OSU’s best passer ever.

    2. Burrow plays on a team that can do more than just throw the ball and a team that can play some defense. It is not Haskins’s fault that he had to throw 73 times this game.

  6. Finally got a QB that can throw ……..rest of team is horribly inept….worst coaching staff in the country…period….this can’t be fixed, at least by this staff..trust me Ryan Day at the top is NOT the answer either. He is part of this clown show. He won 3 games with superior talent against poor teams….Any one of us could have won those games…The Ohio State University needs a fresh start….I believe this year will be the last for Urban in Columbus…..he came out strong out of the gate, but is limping toward the finish line..I think he knows it too. You can see it in his face, he don’t know what to do with this chaos

  7. Story would be better if he had more than 3pts in 1st half

  8. Dwane Haskins vs. Joe Burrow. Who’s the REAL winner here? Dwayne deserves so much better than what he’s getting from this trash group of coaches!
