Fall camp got underway for the Buckeyes this past Friday and every single Ohio State position coach has a mental list of things that they need to get done. In fact, they may actually have a physical list as well. Speculating as to what might be on each assistant coach’s list is always a fun exercise, and there are no shortages of items that will need to be addressed.
The No. 4 player on this list missed his junior season in high school and because of that didn’t show up on most recruiting radars until it was too late to keep him away from Ohio State, where he emerged as a legitimate weapon late last season as a true freshman. According to ESPN, there were 156 receivers in the 2018 recruiting class that were better than Chris Olave.
One of the fun things about Ohio State opening camp is that they also release some entertaining clips of the action. With practice Nos. 1 and 2 in the books now, a little bit of action has been had. In the videos below, you’ll see a pair of young wide receivers looking like veterans. The first video features action from day one, including some clips of Ryan Day’s…
Last year, the Buckeyes had a star emerge at quarterback as Dwayne Haskins set all kinds of Ohio State passing records. The year before, it was freshman running back JK Dobbins. In 2016, you saw Malik Hooker, Curtis Samuel, Marshon Lattimore, Nick Bosa and I can’t even remember who else become stars. It happens every year. New stars take over…
One year ago, Chris Olave was in high school. Now a sophomore wide receiver at Ohio State, Olave didn’t arrive on campus until last summer. Despite his “late” arrival, his teammates started talking him up during fall camp last year. Olave then stayed in the shadows a bit, stuck behind Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon on the depth chart.
The Buckeyes went about replacing outside receivers Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon this spring, turning toward several players to give it a go. Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor returned and provided a veteran presence for a group that needs it. The group has also seen an injury to redshirt freshman Kamryn Babb and the transfers of…
Chris Olave came to Ohio State from Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California. He was ranked the No. 68 receiver in the nation per the 247Sports Composite and the No. 399 player in the 2018 class overall. According to ESPN’s rankings, there were 156 receivers in the 2018 class better than Olave. He signed with Ohio State over…
Last season, Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon combined to procure 77 receptions for 1,370 yards and 19 touchdowns. For the first eight games, they were splitting reps at the Z receiver spot. Once Austin Mack was lost due to injury at the X, McLaurin moved over and shared reps with Binjimen Victor. As the No. 1 Z receiver down the…
Chris Olave caught a pass in the very first game he ever played in. It came in the season opener against Oregon State and went for five yards. He then went the next eight games with just one more reception. When Austin Mack was lost for the season at Purdue, Terry McLaurin moved over to Mack’s X receiver spot and helped out Binjimen Victor.
2018 was a fantastic season, and one that came with plenty of excitement. The Buckeyes finished the regular season with just one loss and won a conference championship. Though the Purdue game still stings, it shouldn’t overshadow some other truly amazing moments. And, in order to make it as far as they have, preparing…
Some Buckeyes had an inkling that change was coming, but most had no idea that Urban Meyer was going to be announcing his retirement. They had seen the stress that this past year had put on their head coach, as well as the headaches that he was suffering, but when Meyer called an early-morning team meeting last…
