Chris Olave capped the ensuing drive with a 37-yard touchdown catch that expanded Ohio State’s lead to 14-3. And then, just like he did last November, Olave followed up his offensive touchdown with a huge play on special teams.
I was close on some aspects of this game but like many people I thought it would be much closer than it was. Read: I thought Cincinnati might score some actual points. But, I’m not complaining. Justin Fields made me look smart last Saturday, which is a rare feat and one that I’m eternally grateful for. My prediction for him was 20 completions for 238 yards…
Justin Fields was electric, as we knew he should be. I was very close on his pass total (25 vs. a projected 26) and completions (18 vs. 21). He managed to outshine my TD total, throwing one more TD pass than I anticipated. I thought that the other QBs would see more action, but Ryan Day left Fields in for the majority of the game, limiting the backup…
COLUMBUS — Wednesday was the second day of practice this week for the Buckeyes as they prepare for Saturday’s game with Cincinnati. Following practice, a handful of Buckeyes spoke with reporters. Among them were junior cornerback Jeff Okudah, junior linebackers Baron Browning and Pete Werner, fifth-year senior defensive tackle Jashon Cornell…
Welcome back to the first Grumpy Old Buckeye of the 2019 Ohio State season. If you’re new to this column, welcome! The aim here is to be the voice of negativity, even when things are generally pretty great. I point out the things from each game that make me want to walk out onto my lawn in my bathrobe and yell at people about it.
Justin Fields is an interesting case study in envy. He is the starting quarterback at Ohio State, which any number of people have wanted to be over the decades. However, he is also the guy replacing the greatest passing quarterback in school history, which means his every throw will be judged, and most of them will be found short of Haskins’ standard.
For most college football players, their freshman season is a constant battle to gain footing on a merry-go-round made of quicksand and confusion. Each step is a learning process, but eventually the quicksand solidifies and the merry-go-round slows down. For Ohio State sophomore wide receiver Chris Olave, he found his footing relatively quickly upon…
Everybody loves college football. If somebody tells you they don’t love it, they’re wrong. We look forward to particular games and watching certain players. Each week we get to see something new. That is especially true if you think about the sheer number of individual matchups there are to watch this season. And that’s just the Ohio State games.
For several reasons, Ryan Day raised some eyebrows when he hired Greg Mattison to be one of his two defensive coordinators. From the outset, Mattison has been paired with Jeff Hafley as the Buckeyes’ coordinators, and they sat down with Larry Johnson back in the winter to start putting their defensive system together. Two weeks out from the…
