Some college coaches just aren’t big fans of recruiting, and so when they get an opportunity to go to the NFL, the decision is a no-brainer. When Jeff Hafley — who is now Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator — had that same opportunity, he left for the NFL as well, but it had nothing to do with recruiting. Hafley was an assistant coach at Pitt from…
Ohio State allowed 25.5 points per game last year, which was the most in modern Buckeye history. It topped the old low-water mark of 24.7 points from John Cooper’s 1989 defense. Eighty percent of last year’s defensive staff is now off to other endeavors and they have been replaced by defensive coordinators Jeff Hafley and Greg Mattison…
It wasn’t that long ago that Ohio State’s quarterback room consisted of Justin Fields, Chris Chugunov, and walk-on Danny Vanatsky. For a program that wants four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster at all times, they were two short. There even came a time this spring when Buckeye head coach Ryan Day admitted that, because of the transfer…
When the Ohio State coordinators spoke with reporters recently, one of the more popular topics was recruiting, particularly on defense. At the time, the Buckeyes’ lone defensive commitment was Florida defensive back Lejond Cavazos. Since then, they have added Pickerington defensive lineman Ty Hamilton. With a large batch of official visits taking…
No, this is not “the tight end story” again. Rather, this particularly piece is an explanation as to why the Ohio State tight ends don’t get the ball as much as those outside the program think they should. Jim Tressel once answered this question by saying that if the tight ends are getting the ball, then Ted Ginn, Santonio Holmes, and Anthony Gonzalez aren’t.
Few quarterbacks possess the physical traits of Ohio State sophomore quarterback Justin Fields. Heck, few humans do. Fields is 6-foot-3, 230-some pounds, with a big arm and 4.4 speed. He is the prototype. But that doesn’t automatically make him a great quarterback, or even a starting quarterback. Sure, it’s a great place to start, but there are still rules that…
The Ohio State football team has gone through a number of changes from January until now. A new head coach. New defensive staff. New quarterback room. But perhaps no single Buckeye has gone through more changes than junior Brendon White. After spending a second or two at linebacker prior to his freshman season, and then a stint at wide…
You better start swimming or you’ll sink like a stone, for the times they are a-changin’. Little did Bob Dylan know way back then that he would be singing about college football and the transfer portal and how coaches better adapt or die. Recruiting is the lifeblood of programs like Ohio State, but that recruiting has now been put to the test…
Spring practice has been over for two months now, but that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes are taking it easy. The process for championship teams doesn’t allow for much time off, even with NCAA rules in place to make sure there is no actual football going on. While no actual football activities can be organized by the program, players are…
In every job that Ryan Day — or anybody — has ever had, there have been expectations. When Day was a graduate assistant for Urban Meyer in 2005, there were expectations put upon him by his head coach. He met and then exceeded those expectations and all of the others to follow over the next dozen years. When he was hired as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator…
Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann spoke with reporters on Wednesday and was asked a variety of questions. Eventually, the conversation turned north, specifically Michigan’s hiring of Juwan Howard. Howard, who has no previous head coaching experience, was an assistant coach with the Miami Heat. He started coaching…
