Last week’s edition of The Game was awesome. There’s no getting around it. I went in with guarded optimism, my weekly statistical projection giving the Buckeyes a very close victory. Instead, they dissected Don Brown’s “gameplan” like he was a middle-of-the-pack Big 12 defensive strategist. And, in just four hours, Urban Meyer turned…
It’s the regular season finale of the Grumpy Old Buckeye, the column that aims to be the voice of negativity, even when things are going great (and let’s face it, most everything was pretty great yesterday). It’s where I point out the things from each game that make me want to walk out onto my lawn in my bathrobe and yell at people about it.
Just like I had said in last week’s statistical projections… 52-51, OSU wins an overtime thriller! Alright, so that’s obviously a lie. I thought that OSU would come out and dominate Maryland from start to finish. As you saw, they did not do that. In fact, I found myself, several times, looking at the score and thinking, “Oh, wow, Maryland’s…
The 2018 Ohio State football team hasn’t looked much like the stereotypical Buckeye squad in a lot of ways. The defense gave up big play after big play and ranked among the worst in the nation for much of September and October. The team threw the ball more than any OSU team in history, breaking passing records on an almost weekly basis. And for a full month, it couldn’t get a run game established, even against bad competition…
Before I get into the recap and statistical projections, go ahead and allow yourself a nice, calm exhale. Ohio State did what we’ve been waiting on them to do for several weeks. They played, perhaps, their most complete game of the season and beat a ranked opponent on the road. Sure, they toppled Penn State, in…
The season continues to fly by at supersonic speeds, even if certain games plod by like the mascot of Ohio State’s next opponent. Ohio State’s 26-6 win at Michigan State wasn’t a beauty contest but I think it’s gorgeous to get a 100-yard rusher against the country’s top run defense and regardless of how inept the Spartans…
COLUMBUS — Ohio State has announced the Players of the Game and Champions from the Buckeyes 26-6 win at Michigan State on Saturday, and there is a rare double dip involved. The Players of the Game on offense were fourth-year junior running back Mike Weber and fifth-year senior wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
Welcome to the Michigan State edition of the Grumpy Old Buckeye, the voice of negativity, whether I have cause or not. This is the place where I write about the things from each game that make me want to walk out onto my lawn in my bathrobe and yell at people about it. This week we’re talking Ohio State vs. Sparty.
We did it, everyone! We beat Nebraska! I’m just going to convince myself that this is the mid-90s and that our local team pulled off a stunning 36-31 victory over the Cornhuskers! It sounds better than, “We did it! We beat a team that’s now 2-7 while continuing to make a lot of the same mistakes…
The Ohio State offense went back to the future against Nebraska, and it paid off in a big game on the ground. The Bucks put up 229 yards on the ground by removing run-pass option plays from the game plan this week. “To be honest, I don’t think that there were any RPOs today. Not that I remember,” said right tackle Isaiah Prince. “We got back to old Buckeye football. Just run at them and show them that we are strong,” said running back J.K. Dobbins, who finished with 163 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground…
COLUMBUS — Among the list of areas where Ohio State needed to show improvement this week was the run game. After four quarters of play Saturday against Nebraska, it was clear that the Buckeyes were better this week than they have been since very early in the season. The 229 yards rushing may not have been…
